AFAS is a great place to go for foot issues. Dr. Kern and all the staff were all fantastic; very knowledgeable, professional, and courteous every step of the way. If you have a choice in where you can go for foot or ankle issues, go here, they are great at what they do! I called AFAS to get some information, particularly about billing and insurance they accepted. The individual I talked to was particularly unhelpful and not so polite. I decided to look elsewhere. I got much better information and help from Legacy Podiatric. I haven't had the appointment yet, but if their medical care is as good as their billing specialist I will be a new customer for them. Great medical service, bad billing practices. Quality of medical service provided to my son for his ingrown toenails was excellent. Unfortunately, the billing practices were deceptive and potentially fraudulent. We were told the office visit would be charged at one rate, and then AFAS changed the rate to a higher amount after the fact to the "higher level of service" which is the maximum allowed billable amount with Blue Cross. Because we have not yet met our deductible, I had to pay the difference in price between what I was told the service would cost and the inflated amount for insurance billing purposes. It took multiple calls and a physical visit to the Wasilla office to finally get a return call from the Anchorage Billing administrator, who refused to refund us the difference. I will not return to this medical service provider unless it changes it's billing practices. I've only been to my first appt, but I had an extremely positive experience. Front desk staff were friendly and polite. Wait was very minimal. Dr Kern is professional, obviously highly knowledgeable as well as thorough in his approach. Solid, informative, and up to date on techniques. They helped my wife make substantial improvement on a troublesome ankle. We avoided surgery and that was one of our goals.
