Love this place. The staff are super nice and happy to answer any questions. There are plenty of trails beyond just the boardwalks, but be aware of the posted signs and don't go anywhere you're not supposed to be. Some trails are harder hikes than other; if you stick to the main path it's pretty easy, though (i.e. the Crow Pass trail, before it splits off to just the Crow Pass trail (there are many maps posted along the trails, so just check those)). The Albert Loop Trail is also pretty easy. The Dew Mound Trail is more ups and downs and having to hike on small rocks and roots. If you just want to see the mountains, the boardwalks are a short 5 minute walk from the parking area (parking is $5 without an ERNC parking pass (State Park Passes DO NOT work here)). Pro tip: if you're willing, go in the early morning (the trails are always open, but still pay for parking even if the building is closed). Your chances of seeing a moose chomping on grasses near the main boardwalk, as well as on the paths, is greatly increased. Just be weary of the fact that they are aggressive creatures if they feel threatened, so make sure to make noise while walking so you don't sneak up on them, don't try to get close, and don't try to pass them: stop and go back. Wait for them to pass or find another way around. Also, be weary of bears in the summer; check the posting board outside the front doors of the main building for animal sightings and trail conditions. There's also a book inside of sightings by visitors. A great place for kids! They have a touch center where you can put "hands on" pelts, different species of wood, skulls, paw prints, and antlers. There are lakes, rivers, trails, and plenty of fauna and flora more to see. They can explore, roam and learn here. This is what fall looks like at the Eagle River Nature Center. Absolutely beautiful place to take a hike; it got everything: snow covered mountain, crystal clear streams and deep woods full of wild animals. Also the visitor center has some very interesting learning material, including bones, furs and introduction on animals of Alaska. Highly recommend it~ Beautiful area with lovely trails in and out of forest along a river with mountain views. Beautiful place to take the family and has a great learning center and the staff are super friendly.
