What happened to this place? It must be under new management; a few weeks ago, the menu was great, and the staff, while young and inexperienced, were fun and helpful. Yesterday while out with three friends I insisted we visit Blues Central because "they have amazing cocktails and food." Part of the experience of a "speakeasy" includes knocking on the door and communicating the password through a slot. We arrived upstairs to find the door wide open. The curtains were also drawn open, which sucked for the atmosphere. We were not greeted by anyone, after standing in the entry we eventually chose a table and passed around the new menu....what the hell is with your menu? What could have led you to believe that egg whites are what make you a good bar? The menu is tiny, the cocktails all contain sugar and egg whites, and there is no food. The waiter/bartender was a total douche. He approached our table and told us all that they were slammed tonight, and we probably wouldn't be seeing our server very often (there were plenty of empty tables and this place is tiny to begin with). My friend asked three different times for a suggestion/recommendation and the guy kept telling him to look at the menu and decide for himself, before walking away in frustration. I think he wants to be a director or something, because he clearly doesn't enjoy his current line of work. We walked out after that. I was so pissed, slightly at the egg whites, mostly at how far the place had fallen in such a short time. Blues central used to be a unique experience, a place I would take someone in Anchorage to show off in a classy cocktail bar; no longer. I won't be returning. Lovely cocktails, great and knowledgeable staff. Getting in can be a bit tricky, but that's half the fun. And edit as of 10/7/17 Early 2017? Classiest bar in Anchorage, great ambiance, wonderful drinks, and an amazing menu. Late 2017? It fell to the level of the rest of Anchorages bars. Loud people and music making previous easy conversations turn into yelling fests. I watched several patrons blatantly stealing glasses, and it was crowded to easily twice the previous capacity. I maintain that it WAS the best place for an upscale drink, but if it continues in the current directiom, I cannot recommend it over other places, such as the Whales Tail, or 49th State Brewing for good whiskey. Probably the best place in Anchorage for cocktails. They seem to be moving away from their speakeasy vibe these days, which may or may not be a good thing, depending on your tastes. It's undeniable that Blues Central is getting more and more popular, so it may be harder these days to get in with a group. But the drinks are made with care, and the bartenders are extremely knowledgeable, so if fine drinking is your thing, Blues Central is your place. Things has definitely changed, but I like it. I dont have to open the majestic bible to see a cocktail list (who reads all that. Its not Stephen Kings Novel) the menu definitely need some attention, but the food is delicious (I dont usually eat bar food). Kinda glad the music has been changing (Some are upbeat and some good ol fashion) Who really wants to be in a dark bar with some "slit your wrist" music in the background". However, I do agree with some, that the music is loud and I have to talk to someone like I was at a concert. Kudos for the change! I went here for the first time as part of a bachelorette party. There were 10 ladies total, all dressed in full 1920s/flapper regalia. Not a quiet crowd for sure. From the immersive experience (you have to know the password to be let in) to the kind staff (my request for a mystery drink from the bartender was humored), this place was top notch. If you're looking for well concocted drinks, absinthe, or tasty food in the classiest of environments, this place fits the bill. To add, the staff was accommodating to our large group, even helping hang our banner and letting us decorate the tables. They really made a great night for the bride and her crew. If I still lived in Alaska, this would be my go to for a night out!
