The Regal Reef is a great place! Matt is very knowledgable and passionate. I have only had positive experiences with this shop! The shop is very clean. Matt has an amazing stock of fish & corrals! Definitely the best place in Alaska to shop for your saltwater fish. Little known shop. Only been in one time but, it was well worth a look. Good prices and awesome staff, made me feel a lot better about starting up a salt water tank for the first time. Excellent prices and great customer service. This is definitely the place to go in Alaska. Great shop! Regal Reef has the best prices and quality livestock, all of the fish go through a quarantine process to ensure health. Very knowledgeable staff that provide honest feedback for whatever setup you are currently running or looking at getting. This shop has a great variety of corals and can also do custom orders on anything from livestock to tanks or lighting. Highly recommended. Why give Regal Reef 5 stars? It's not simple. I'm not an easy person to please nor hand out 5 stars. Anchorage had only had 1 real Reef store in the past. Now Anchorage has another, 'Regal Reef'. #1. Store Cleanliness, Organization, & overall look is 5 Stars. Now onto the important stuff.... This shop is owned by a gentleman named Matt. To say he is passionate about Coral is an understatement! I recently acquired a used tank from a friend and figured I'd use it as a Coral/Invert only Quarantine Tank aside from my other QT. When I received the tank/coral I thought there was maybe 1 small colony and 1 large SPS. After 5 weeks I had colonies popping up everywhere. I'm new to Coral (not fish), so I took pictures and sent probably 10-15 to Matt. He took the time to reply to every picture and identify every one, even one dead SPS. His experience obviously comes from decades of being in the hobby as everything he has taught me has been spot on with the latest publications (not forum gossip). What is different from other shops? 1 on 1 time and care. It doesn't matter if it's something as simple as me learning that my API test kits lacked accuracy (now proven), to buying larger equipment. Matt literally tested his water with Red Sea Marine Test kits and taught me how to use them. Some might think that's simple, but I have a brain injury and it's difficult to understand sometimes. The staff care. $$$ MONEY $$$, Lets get down to the reason most RUN to the Internet. Why buy from a shop with so much mark-up that it's cheaper to buy online? Well, Regal Reef is an Authorized dealer for companies like BRS (Bulk Reef Supplies) & many, many others.. I like to support Local businesses. It's easy when you have Regal Reef. 95% of the time I find that Regal Reef is matching online prices! The other 5% of the time they tend to be cheaper! If not, just talk to the staff about what you found and how much. They'll be honest with you. REWARDS! Matt has a Rewards program! I love it! He frequently updates his Facebook, & I get regular emails about his sales and fish in stock. I would like to see more emails with updated lists of all his fish/corals in stock and sizes, but I'm happy with knowing what's on sale. I can dream, but that's a LOT of work! HEALTHY STOCK: Anyone in the Marine hobby has dealt with Cryptocaryon (M-Ich), and likely Marine Velvet. Regal Reef (unlike ANY other stores I've visited in Anchorage) treats ALL incoming fish stock for "nasties" (If they need it). Regal Reef has 2 rows of permanent Quarantine Tanks that display fish (not counting some in the back). When healthy, they are moved out of QT. Regal Reef treats with Cupramine (IMO the best treatment ANY store can use as I don't like buying fish in Hypo) to treat fish that are infected. IF you don't QT your fish/Inverts/Corals you WILL eventually learn the hard way it's a bad idea. I love being able to buy fish (even if it's been exposed to Marine Ich) and know it's healthy and that the date is RECORDED from when it was placed into QT. This ensures that I can bring the fish home and complete its treatment in my QT. Regal Reefs Tanks are not connected to a "main" sump. This tends to ensure disease can spread. You will NEVER see employees dipping hands in one tank without cleaning their hands before going to another tank and/or wearing gloves! EVERYTHING IS FOR SALE!!! Unlike another Reef store in Anchorage, if you see Coral & Fish it is for sale. There is nothing more frustrating than being told over & over again that~ This or that is Not for Sale. The Infamous XXXX-FISH NFS "Tag". I understand most Every store having a store only "Display". Regal Reef is clear about items for sale. It's a newer store. I believe with a few tweaks like adding price signs for corals ect.. It's the perfect shop for all of us who love the hobby! If you are NEW to coral (like My wife & I), Have no fear. They love to teach and are willing to take the time to help you with no judgement! Regal Reef is a 5 Star Reef Shop that would make a great franchise.
